Jess Tollman Presentation Topic: “Training the Brand New Client: A Coaching Approach” Training someone brand new to the gym poses unique challenges. The gym can be an intimidating, overwhelming environment. Likewise, previously sedentary clients will likely lack body awareness and motor control.  As coaches, we can better serve brand new clients by utilizing both technique AND mindfulness in our coaching. We need to show clients not only the WHAT of movement, the desired body shapes, but also the HOW of movement, the intention and attention that allows them to achieve those shapes.  Clients who move with greater intent and awareness in the gym make more progress and have fewer setbacks. By blending technical and mindful coaching cues, we help our clients better internalize movement skills to become confident and competent movers for the long term.  Jess is passionate about helping people of all backgrounds and skill levels enhance their lives through fitness.  Jess joined the MBSC team after completing the summer 2021 internship.  Prior to MBSC, Jess worked as a physical education instructor, apprentice teacher, and residential counselor at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA.  She believes that physical and mental health are deeply interconnected and that both aspects can be elevated through a tailored strength and conditioning program. Jess is a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) through the National Association of Sports Medicine and a Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC).  Jess earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University in 2015 where after studying social sciences, and played varsity soccer – winning both academic and athletic awards.  A lifelong learner, Jess pursues continuing education with the goal of providing the best possible service to her clients.
